The growth
The College started its journey in 1963 with only 7 departments in the Arts faculty offering Pass courses. A policy of steady academy expansion pursued subsequently resulted in the institution currently having 18 departments in various disciplines of Arts and Science.
History
Behala College was established as a grants-in-aid State Government sponsored college in the year 1963 affiliated to Calcutta University under the Refugee Rehabilitation Scheme of the Government of India. It was recognized under section 2f by UGC in 1982. The College came under the pay packet scheme of the Government of West Bengal in the late seventies.

Situated in a plot of 1.93 acres located in an urban setting within kolkata, the college has many locational advantages, being in a quiet area at one end of the city and at the same time very much part of an academically rich, as well as industrially and commercially vibrant centre of India.

The Mission
The College came into being with a mission to provide higher education to the poorer and deprived sections of the people of the area. The goal has been to provide an education that integrates curricular knowledge with value education and need based training.
Rabindranath Tagore's message:Nishi din Alok shiksha jwaluk prane (Let the flame of knowledge eternally illumine the soul), has inspired and guided the institution in its endeavour to light up the inner flame among its pupil as well as to empower them to face the challenges of life ahead.
